It can be supplied with a tensile strength of up to 1800 MPa in strip and wire forms to produce tempers ranging from 1/16 hard to full hard. Type 301 cold-rolled stainless steel (chrome-nickel) was produced to meet the need for a strip with an intermediate forming quality with a hardness range requiring minimum tensile and yield strengths of 150,000 PSI and 110,000 PSI, respectively, with an elongation of 15-18% in a 2-inch strip. The ductility and elongation of 301 half cold-rolled stainless steel are superior to types 302 and 304, but the 301 steel hardens much more rapidly.

The properties of 301H stainless steel are specified for flat-rolled products (plates, sheets and coils) in the ASTM A666 standards. Similar but not identical mechanical properties are specified in EN 10088.2 and JIS G4305 and in proprietary specifications.
